(Tribune News Service) — George Tristan, who served as chairman of the Boulder County GOP for roughly four months, has resigned to focus on his health and to undergo chemotherapy.
Tristan has stage 4 Hodgkin's lymphoma.
A Longmont resident, Tristan was chairman of the Boulder County GOP from February to June, where he advocated for more community engagement instead of focusing entirely on recruiting and campaigning for Republican candidates in Boulder County, which heavily favors Democrats.
Boulder County has more than 93,000 active Democratic voters compared to just over 25,000 active Republican voters, according to Boulder County Elections data.
In an email Tuesday, Tristan said that he was particularly proud to have organized a day where the Boulder County GOP helped build tiny homes for unhoused veterans at the Longmont Veterans Community Project.
"Through these kinds of efforts, my vision was to provide the county GOP the opportunity to demonstrate to the community that Republicans are good, kind-hearted and caring individuals that care about the community ... not the evil MAGA extremists or a threat to democracy that Democrats and much of the press lead the public to believe," Tristan said.
Tristan also wasn't one to shy away from controversy having led a protest in Niwot against a drag queen story hour on Feb. 25.
"As conservatives, we feel strongly that the practice of transgenderism is well within the rights of an adult, but should not be exposed or promoted to children," Tristan said.
Tristan works for Ball Aerospace as a material and process control engineer and also served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 12 years, where he was honorably discharged.
A GiveSendGo donation page has been created to help Tristan cover his medical bills.
