SYRACUSE, N.Y. (Tribune News Service) — A chartered American Airlines flight touched down at Syracuse Hancock International Saturday evening where passengers received a hero’s welcome on the tarmac before heading to the gate.
On board were 80 Syracuse Honor Flight veterans returning from a long day touring the U.S. Navy Memorial, WWII Memorial, the U.S. Marine Corps and USAF Memorials, and the Korean and Vietnam War Memorials in Washington DC. The day was punctuated by observing the “Changing of the Guard” at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery.
Family, friends and members of the public lined the main building of the Syracuse airport from the baggage claim to the center escalators. Celebrants waved flags and posters as the Honor Flight Veterans processed through an emotional welcome home celebration.
Honor Flight Syracuse, currently led by President Kevin Bradley, has flown over 1,200 veterans since 2012 from Central and Northern New York and the Mohawk Valley to view memorials in Washington D.C., at no cost to the veterans.
