(Tribune News Service) — The U.S. Postal Service is marking a major milestone in American history with the release of three new commemorative stamps celebrating the 250th anniversaries of the U.S. Army, Navy and Marine Corps, USPS announced Wednesday.
The stamps honor the legacy, service and sacrifice of these military branches — each rooted in the fight for American independence, USPS said.
A special first day-of-issue event will take place at 11 a.m. (Eastern) on May 16 at Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C. The event is free and open to the public, with attendees encouraged to RSVP on the USPS website.
The stamps, designed by USPS art director Antonio Alcalá, feature the emblems of each branch against a clean white background, with inscriptions reading “250 YEARS OF SERVICE,” “SINCE 1775,” and “FOREVER/USA.” As Forever stamps, they will always match the price of a First-Class Mail 1-ounce letter, USPS said.
Each branch’s origin traces back to the Revolutionary War: The Continental Army on June 14, 1775; the Continental Navy on October 13; and the Continental Marines on November 10, USPS. They were disbanded after the war but were then re-established to lay the foundation for today’s military, USPS added.
