The captain of a ship operating outside Government Cut, the large inlet leading to the PortMiami, was seriously injured in a fall Tuesday morning.
Both Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the accident on the 250-foot anchor-handling ship — the Atlantic Power — and the latter agency hoisted the captain on board a helicopter and flew him to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Christopher Crowther, vice president of the Atlantic Oceanic LLC, the Massachusetts-based company that owns the ship, said the captain slipped and fell while on an exterior staircase of the vessel around 9:20 a.m.
Crowther said in a statement that after initial treatment at Ryder, doctors determined the captain’s injuries are non-life-threatening and he’s expected to make a full recovery.
“The company would like to extend a heartfelt thanks not only to the U.S. Coast Guard and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue for their prompt and professional response, but also the the crew on board, whose quick reaction ensured the [captain] received medical attention as swiftly as possible,” Crowther said.
Atlantic Oceanic is an offshore renewable energy company. According to its website, the Atlantic Power serves many roles.
“The vessel is capable of operating the I-GRAB in a number of tasks such as Boulder removal, UXO Survey and Clearance. It is also capable of Geotechnical and Geophysical surveys, Walk-to-Work, Cable Lay and recovery.”
