WASHINGTON – The U.S. is providing Ukraine another $125 million in air defense capabilities, anti-tank weapons and radars to detect and counter enemy artillery, the Pentagon announced Friday.

The aid will be provided through the presidential drawdown authority, which means equipment is pulled from existing U.S. military stocks and sent to Ukraine on an emergency basis.

This new aid follows a Pentagon announcement last week that Ukraine would get $1.7 billion in military aid to help in its war effort. About $1.5 billion will be provided through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, which gives long-term aid to procure weapons and munitions from the defense industry or partner countries for a later time. This includes capabilities to augment Ukraine’s air defense and anti-tank weapons, as well as funding to sustain equipment previously committed by the United States.

Russia declared a “federal-level” emergency in its Kursk region following a large-scale incursion from Ukrainian forces. Russia sent reinforcements there on Friday, four days after hundreds of Ukrainian troops poured across the border in what appeared to be Kyiv’s biggest attack on Russian soil since the war began more than two years ago, The Associated Press reported.

The Biden administration said Thursday that the operation is an acceptable use of U.S. weapons to strike inside Russia, complying with a May policy change that allows Ukrainian commanders to do so for the limited purpose of defending the northeastern city of Kharkiv.

“As they see attacks coming across the border, they have to be able to have the capabilities to respond,” Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh told reporters.

The U.S. has provided about $55.6 billion in military aid to Ukraine since Russian forces invaded in February 2022.

The items in the military aid announced Friday include:

• Stinger missiles.

• Ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems.

• 155mm and 105mm artillery ammunition.

• Multi-mission radars.

• Tube-launched, optically tracked, wire-guided missiles.

• Javelin and AT-4 anti-armor systems.

• High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle ambulances.

• Small arms ammunition.

• Demolitions equipment and munitions.

• Equipment to protect critical national infrastructure.

• Spare parts, ancillary equipment, services, training and transportation.
