Calendars made by Pacific Northwest-based U.S. military personnel featuring gigantic cats overseeing construction projects are back, and this year they’ve also gone to the dogs.
The Portland, Ore., branch of the Army Corps of Engineers is scheduled to release the second edition of its pet calendars by midday Monday, in a follow-up to its viral social media campaign last year.
Staffers at the Portland office, which handles civil works in Oregon and southwestern Washington, superimposed the cats and dogs into landscape photos of notable public infrastructure projects.
The 2024 calendars come in cat and dog editions showcasing different public works and are free to download as a PDF that can be printed.
Images of pets towering over projects like hydroelectric dams are part of an effort by the Portland branch to portray their work in an entertaining light.
“This product was created to tell the story of our district and what we do in a way that’s actually enjoyable for the average member of the public,” Portland district spokesman Chris Gaylord said.
The district is one of 38 in the Army Corps of Engineers and operates more than 700 dams and 12,000 miles of inland waterways, a 2022 report by the Congressional Research Service said.
The inaugural cat calendar “won the internet” when it was introduced last year, according to The Oregonian newspaper. It garnered over 530,000 downloads on the Corps’ digital library, Gaylord said.
“It was really so inspiring to see how much joy this little product brought to people all over the world,” Gaylord said.
This year’s pinup pets belong to Corps of Engineers employees. Gaylord said he received nearly 750 photos from 150 agency workers.
With so many pet pics, it was tough to include everyone, but a bonus page at the end of the calendar features a grid of most of the pets, complete with their names.
