FORT DRUM, , N.Y. — A man was arrested Thursday after he snuck onto Fort Drum, injured a solider and stole a military Humvee, New York state troopers said.
Nathan J. McElhone, 46, of Theresa, was accused of driving onto the base near Training Range 41B and stealing the military Humvee at about 5 a.m. Thursday, according to a news release issued by state police.
While stealing the Humvee, McElhone injured the soldier who was trying to stop him, troopers said. The severity of the soldier’s injuries was not immediately revealed by state police.
Members of a military unit stopped McElhone before he left the base and he was handed over to Military Police, troopers said. He was in possession of several stolen military items including targets and a wooden shelving unit, they said.
McElhone was arraigned in the Clayton Town Court, and held without bail by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. He was charged with second-degree robbery, first-degree reckless endangerment, fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and third-degree criminal trespass.
Troopers were assisted by the Fort Drum Military Police, the Military Police Investigators and the Fort Drum Federal Police.
