An airstrike conducted by U.S. Central Command forces on Saturday in Northwest Syria killed a senior official in an al-Qaida affiliate, CENTCOM announced Sunday.
CENTCOM described the operative as a senior finance and logistics official in the al-Qaida affiliate organization Hurras al-Din.
“We will continue to relentlessly pursue terrorists in order to defend our homeland, and U.S., allied, and partner personnel in the region,“ CENTCOM commander Gen. Michael Kurilla said.
The strike comes three days after an airstrike by Iraqi Security Forces in the vicinity of Rawa, Iraq, that killed five ISIS operatives, according to CENTCOM. An initial post-strike clearance confirmed the dead ISIS operatives, various medium and small caliber weapons, grenades, suicide explosive belts and ammunition.
On Jan. 30, U.S. forces launched an airstrike in northwestern Syria that killed a high-ranking member of a terrorist group with ties to al-Qaida, according to U.S. Central Command. Muhammad Salah al-Za’bir was a senior operative in Hurras al-Din, CENTCOM said late Thursday in a statement, which added that the fatal strike had occurred the same day.
The strikes are part of U.S. forces’ ongoing efforts to disrupt terrorism in the region.
