The Israel Defense Forces has recovered the bodies of three Israelis who were held in Gaza, IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari said Friday. The bodies were found in tunnels in Gaza during a military operation Thursday night, he said.
All three civilians - Yitzhak Gelernter, 58; Shani Louk, 22; and Amit Buskila, 28 - had attended the Nova music festival that was attacked by Hamas on Oct. 7. They were killed at the Mefalsim intersection in Israel after fleeing the concert grounds, according to an IDF statement.
Medical officials at Israel’s Forensic Institute and the Ministry of Health identified the bodies.
Louk, a German-Israeli national, was declared dead by Israeli authorities last year.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu extended his condolences to the families in a statement on X, restating his commitment to “return all our hostages, the dead and the martyrs alike.”
More than 125 hostages remain in Gaza, according to Israeli authorities, although it is unclear how many are still living.
On Thursday, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield chaired an informal meeting of the U.N. Security Council to discuss the conditions of Israeli hostages, including six U.S. citizens who remain in Gaza.
