Another U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer downed two anti-ship ballistic missiles Saturday in the southern Red Sea while assisting a container ship under attack, U.S. Central Command said.
The USS Gravely shot down the two missiles fired from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen after responding with the destroyer USS Laboon to an assistance call at 8:30 a.m. Saturday from the Maersk Hangzhou, according to post on X, formerly Twitter, by Central Command that day.
The Singapore-flagged vessel, owned and operated from Denmark, was struck by a missile while transiting the southern Red Sea but, “is reportedly seaworthy and there are no reported injuries,” the message states.
“This is the 23rd illegal attack by the Houthis on international shipping since Nov. 19,” Central Command said.
Thursday, the destroyer USS Mason shot down a drone and an anti-ship ballistic missile fired by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea, according to Central Command.
That attack followed two days after U.S. fighter jets and the Laboon, part of the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group, fended off a dozen drones, three anti-ship ballistic missiles and two land-attack cruise missiles over the course of 10 hours on Tuesday in the Red Sea.
