GRAFENWOEHR, Germany — A British soldier driving a military utility vehicle fatally struck a German motorcyclist on a highway between U.S. Army training areas in Bavaria, police said Friday.

The crash occurred near the town of Gebenbach at 11:50 a.m. Thursday, when the unidentified 22-year-old soldier failed to yield to a 17-year-old girl riding a motorcycle in the opposite direction, Michael Kernebeck, chief inspector for Sulzbach-Rosenberg Police Inspection, said in a statement.

The vehicle was turning left from highway B14 onto highway B299 toward Grafenwoehr, Kernebeck said. It had two occupants at the time, Oberpfalz media reported Thursday.

The teen, who was from Amberg-Sulzbach district, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The stretch of highway is located between the Grafenwoehr and Hohenfels training areas, which are administered by the U.S. 7th Army Training Command. The road was closed for more than three hours due to the crash.

An investigation is being conducted by the affected partner nations, training command spokeswoman Lacey Justinger said Friday in an email. The command offered condolences to the girl’s family.

The crash is being investigated on the civilian side by the Amberg public prosecutor’s office, Kernebeck said.
