A bus carrying U.S. service members crashed into a bridge in Chef-du-Pont near Sainte-Mère-Église in Normandy, injuring three soldiers and a bus driver aboard, according to local television channel 3 Normandy and U.S. Army officials.
The collision occurred around 8 a.m. on Saturday when the bus was traveling through a low-clearance tunnel under a railway line. The bus, which was too tall for the tunnel, became wedged beneath the railway bridge.
All three soldiers involved in the accident — a specialist, a staff sergeant and a sergeant first class — were members of the 82nd Airborne, Terry Welch, U.S. Army Europe and Africa spokesman, told Stars and Stripes. Two soldiers received lacerations and needed stitches. The third had a sore neck and was assessed for a possible concussion. All three soldiers were released to return to their unit on Saturday morning.
The service members were in Normandy to participate in events marking the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings. Authorities said the group was on their way to attend an American football game between the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in Chef-du-Pont. The other soldiers in the bus continued on foot to the game, Welch said.
