VICENZA, Italy — A U.S. soldier stationed in Vicenza was killed Monday in a traffic collision, an Army spokesman said, confirming some details of local news reports.
Sgt. Devin Guary, 31, was from Spring Lake, N.C.
“Sgt. Devin Guary was a devout Paratrooper who served with the 173rd Airborne Brigade with distinction for a combined total of seven years,” said Capt. Zach Fussey,a spokesman for the 173rd Airborne Brigade. “His optimism, drive to excel and even his vast sports knowledge is what made Sgt. Guary an incredible paratrooper, mentor, friend and, more importantly, a husband and father.”
The crash happened about 1:30 a.m. on a regional road in Cittadella, news outlet VicenzaToday reported.
It involved a Ford Fiesta driven by Guary and a Mercedes driven by a 47-year-old Italian, VicenzaToday and Il Giornale di Vicenza reported.
The Fiesta ended up in a canal, and when rescuers got to the driver, about 20 inches of water had accumulated inside, the VicenzaToday report said, adding that Guary was declared dead at the scene.
The Mercedes driver was pulled from the car and taken to a hospital in Padua with injuries that are not life-threatening, according to the two local news outlets’ reporting.
U.S. military and Italian law enforcement are investigating the cause of the crash.
