As Russia’s invasion grinds on in Ukraine, people in the capital Kyiv commemorate the fallen while trying to live their everyday lives in the midst of war.

Valery, who declined to give his last name, comes to feed the pigeons every other week at the Maidan Nezalezhnosti, Kyiv’s central square. At his home, he doesn’t have electricity and there’s nothing for him to do, he said on Oct. 26, 2022. “At least here, they know me,” he added, referring to the pigeons. (J.P.
