A credit card software outage hitting retail businesses across much of Germany and other parts of Europe also means Esso cards used by the military community for discounted off-base gas purchases could be not working, too.
In a statement Friday, the Army and Air Force Exchange Service said some Esso stations have been affected by the outage, which means customers may not be able to use their cards while traveling over Memorial Day weekend.
“If you visit an Esso station and are not able to use your card to receive tax-free fuel pricing, AAFES will handle the dispute/reimbursement for taxes on your behalf,” it said in a statement.
Information that must be provided, either at an AAFES gas station or by email to yyeuessofuelcard@aafes.com, includes:
• Subject line: last name of customer- Esso card reader not working
• Vehicle registration number
• Attached copies of registration, receipt, front of Esso card
On post, store staff will assist customers with processing the relevant information.
In the meantime, customers are encouraged to carry euros if shopping off post until the credit issue is resolved, AAEFES said.
Verifone, the credit card payment processing company affected by the outage, said Friday that it is working to resolve the problem as quickly as possible.
