11:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, Japan time: Bebinca at last has become a Category 1-equivalent typhoon but has already passed closest point of approach to Okinawa, on its way to rendezvous with eastern China, according to Joint Typhoon Warning Center’s latest forecast track .

At 9 p.m., Bebinca was about 145 miles east-northeast of Kadena Air Base, headed northwest at 15 mph, packing 75-mph sustained winds and 92-mph gusts. U.S. bases on Okinawa remained in Tropical Cyclone Condition of Readiness Storm Watch through Saturday evening. Reverting to seasonal TCCOR 4 could come at any point.

JTWC projects Bebinca to weaken slightly as it makes landfall over eastern China, making a near-direct hit on Shanghai at mid-morning Monday. This is Storm Tracker’s final report on Bebinca.
