Iwakuni sets TCCOR Storm Watch as Tropical Storm Shanshan continues heading away from the air station. (Joint Typhoon Warning Center)

6:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, Japan time: Shanshan‘s forecast closest point of approach to Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni has come and gone, 29 miles south-southeast at 3 p.m. MCAS Iwakuni set TCCOR 1-R for recovery at 3:30 p.m., then TCCOR Storm Watch at 6 p.m.

DODEA schools at Sasebo and Iwakuni will remain closed through the weekend and Tuesday for a training date. All DODEA-Japan high school sports activities, including four football games, have been called off and rescheduled.

Joint Typhoon Warning Center’s latest forecast track projects Shanshan to weaken to tropical-depression status as it moves across Shikoku into Japan’s central Kansai area over the next two days. The area can still expect plenty of rain. Unless something changes dramatically, this should be Storm Tracker’s final update on Shanshan.
