2:45 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, Japan time: Commander Fleet Activities Yokosuka resumed seasonal Tropical Cyclone Condition of Readiness 5 at 5 a.m. Saturday, with Typhoon Ampil continuing to move northeast away from the Tokyo area.

At 3 a.m., Ampil was 188 miles east-northeast of Yokosuka, headed northeast at 13 mph, still packing 115-mph sustained winds and 144-mph gusts, but at storm’s center. Yokosuka’s weather forecast calls for light and variable winds with partly-cloudy skies.

Interesting factoid regarding Ampil: It’s the first typhoon in the 21st Century of Category 3-equivalent intensity packing 127-mph sustained winds at 34 degrees north or above in the Western Pacific basin, according to Westernpacificweather.com. There were only two others on record since 1945, Carmen in 1965 and Oscar in 1995.
