CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa -- An Okinawa-based Marine died after an apparent fall from a building in the capital city of Naha on Thursday morning, according to Japanese police.
The unidentified Marine, who was in his early 20s, was found at 7:25 a.m. lying on the ground near an apartment building in the Tomari district with a head wound. He was taken to a hospital and was pronounced dead about two hours later, Okinawa prefecture police said.
Police said the death is under investigation, and it was unclear whether foul play was involved. An autopsy was to be performed Friday.
The Marine Corps declined to comment Friday morning, saying the death was being investigated and it had no other details to provide.
The identities of deceased servicemembers are usually not made public until next of kin are notified, a process that can take at least 24 hours.
