A power outage, likely caused by an issue stemming from Guam’s northernmost village, delayed classes for some students on Andersen Air Force Base by about two hours Wednesday.

Andersen’s elementary and middle schools announced that morning on Facebook that start times would be postponed until at least 9:45 a.m. School buses also operated on a two-hour delay.

Power was restored by 7:22 a.m. at both schools, which sit adjacent to each other, the elementary school said in a separate Facebook post. However, classes remained delayed until 9:45 a.m., instead of the usual 7:45 a.m. start time.

Brig. Gen. Thomas Palenske, commander of the 36th Wing, said the outage appeared to stem from a problem affecting Yigo, the village that includes Andersen.

“I’m not sure where the failure happened downtown, but we are grateful for [the Guam Power Authority’s] ability to get it fixed,” he told Stars and Stripes that afternoon via Messenger.

No other base operations were affected, Palenske said.

The middle school’s announcement said it was sorry for the disruption.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding and flexibility,” the message said. “Our primary concern is the safety and well-being of our students and staff.”

Palenske shared the school’s post on his Facebook page and reassured base residents that power would be restored soon.

“No need to start eating all the ice cream in your freezer,” he wrote around 6:30 a.m. “The power will be back up in a bit!”
