CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea — Five members of the U.S. Army’s 11th Engineer Battalion are the best squad in the 2nd Infantry Division after a competition in South Korea last week.
Awards were handed out Monday outside division headquarters at Humphreys following the three-day Best Squad competition in and around Camp Casey.
Six, five-man squads representing units across 2nd ID and two squads from a rotational unit, the 3rd Cavalry Regiment, took part in the annual competition. It features fitness and combat-related events ranging from the Army Combat Fitness Test and various weapons lanes to a 12-mile march and individual warrior tasks and squad battle drills.
Squad 3, composed of soldiers from the 11th Engineer Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade, took first place. Each member received an Army Commendation Medal along with a tomahawk trophy.
Second place went to Squad 6 from 3rd Squadron, 3rd Cavalry, which arrived in South Korea in February from Fort Cavazos, Texas. Each soldier received an Army Achievement Medal.
The best noncommissioned officer and best soldier were also recognized during the ceremony.
Sgt. Isaa Alcala of the 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade took the best NCO spot and Pfc. Kallen Gassett won best soldier. Both were awarded a 2nd ID coin and a tomahawk.
