CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — A U.S. airman remained jailed Tuesday following her weekend arrest by Japanese police on suspicion of driving drunk and crashing into a garage at someone’s home.

Staff Sgt. Noelia Silva, 25, of Kadena Air Base, was taken into custody around 12:15 p.m. Sunday in the Takahara section of Okinawa city, a prefectural police spokesman said by phone Tuesday. Police allege Silva drove drunk and failed to report the crash.

The spokesman said Silva was westbound in her white Toyota bB on Takahara-Goya Line Road when she struck the garage door and a concrete facade about seven miles east of Kadena.

No one was injured in the crash, the spokesman said. Some Japanese officials are required to speak to the media only on the condition of anonymity.

Police found Silva near the crash site after a witness reported a “foreign woman” had crashed into a house and fled, the spokesman said.

A Breathalyzer at the scene measured Silva’s blood alcohol content at 0.12%, four times the legal limit for driving in Japan, the spokesman said. By comparison, all 50 U.S. states have set 0.08 as the legal limit for driving under the influence or while impaired.

Silva’s car, impounded at the Okinawa city police station Tuesday, had extensive front-end damage and both airbags were deployed. The metal garage door in Takahara was dented.

Police forwarded Silva’s case to prosecutors on Monday, the spokesman said. If convicted of violating Japanese traffic law, she faces a maximum five years and three months in prison or a $7,400 fine.
