KADENA AIR BASE, Okinawa – While next week’s Far East tournament is a mostly boys event, the first season of DODEA-Pacific’s girls pilot program ended Wednesday with Kadena beating Kubasaki 33-5.
That gave the Panthers a sweep of six regular-season dual meets with the Dragons and victories in all but one event this season – second to Nile C. Kinnick in the 10th Rumble on the Rock in December.
“Having this opportunity gives us a chance to try something new and to put a spotlight on it,” said Kadena junior Brooke Brewer, undefeated this season at 145 pounds.
The pilot program was initially expected to feature Kadena and Kubasaki, the two DODEA schools on Okinawa that boast two of the top four enrollments among DODEA-Pacific high schools.
But Kinnick – No. 3 in enrollment – also joined the party, fielding seven girls wrestlers and going unbeaten in the Kanto Plain regular season, against American School In Japan and Seisen.
All told, DODEA-Pacific now has four girls wrestling teams, at Kinnick, Kubasaki, Kadena and Guam High.
There won’t be a girls division at next week’s Far East tournament at Camp Zama, but there is talk among DODEA-Pacific and other region wrestling officials that one might happen next year, when the tournament moves to Camp Humphreys. The Blackhawks have the largest enrollment among DODEA-Pacific high schools – second overseas only to Ramstein in Germany.
