OSAN AIR BASE, South Korea – Malik Davis and Osan got the early jump on Yokota before Kaden Elwood and the Panthers pulled out all the stops en route to a huge road victory in the chase for Division II playoff space.
Elwood, Yokota’s sophomore backup quarterback, went a perfect 7-for-7 for 153 yards and two touchdowns and added a rushing TD for the Panthers, who rallied from an early 8-0 deficit to pound the Cougars 46-8 Friday at Cougars Field.
“He wanted to put the game on his shoulders and he did,” Panthers coach Michael Woodworth said. “He won the game for us.”
Elwood was thrust into the starting role after last week’s 29-28 overtime home win over Matthew C. Perry; starting quarterback Josh Low was disqualified for an unsportsmanlike conduct violation.
With Elwood under center, the Panthers’ offense amassed 335 yards of offense and six total touchdowns, four on the ground plus Elwood’s two TD tosses. The defense bottled up Osan the rest of the way, recording eight tackles for loss.
All of that came after the Cougars went up early 8-0, with Davis rushing 7 yards for a touchdown and Zeus Queen adding a two-point conversion.
“They (Osan) played their hearts out,” Woodworth said. “We were in a hole in a heartbeat.”
But it was all Panthers from there.
Kicoh Guenther rushed twice for 43 yards, including a 36-yard touchdown, and caught three passes for 63 yards, one of them a 13-yard TD catch. Julian Chuckrey had three receptions for 83 yards, including a 56-yard scoring pass.
Camdyn Campbell added 51 yards on three attempts, including an 11-yard scoring run and led the defense with seven tackles, three for losses. Zachary Nelson scored from 39 yards out. Lucious Como added a sack and a forced fumble for the Panthers.
The Panthers (2-0) next host Zama, while Osan (0-2) travels to Humphreys for an inter-divisional game; both kickoffs are at 6 p.m. Friday.
