MANGILAO, Guam – Dante Parker rushed for a touchdown and stopped two drives with takeaways and Aaron Johnson scored on two lengthy runs as Guam High downed George Washington 20-8 on a rainy Saturday at muddy Gecko Field.

The Panthers improved to 3-0 on the season, matching Father Duenas Memorial, which got its 68th straight win Friday on the same field in equally dreadful conditions.

“It was a mud bowl, whatever you want to call it,” Panthers coach Kevin Manns said. “It was in bad shape.”

As it was, it seemed that Johnson and Parker were impervious to slipping and sliding – just making big plays that either added points for the Panthers or kept the Geckos out of the end zone.

Johnson ran eight times for 200 yards, scoring on runs of 70 and 78 yards. Parker rushed 10 yards for a score. All the points came in the first half, as neither side could gain any traction in the last two quarters.

“Johnson was the heavy lifter” on offense, Manns said.

Parker also had a fumble recovery and an interception, each of which stopped drives by the Geckos (1-2). Isaiah Salas had a tackle for a loss that also stopped a GW drive.

“We had some good defensive work,” Manns said. “Clutch plays by the defense at the most opportune times.”

The game was played four days after Tropical Storm Bolaven passed north of the island, cutting short the number of days the Panthers could practice.

“I’m proud of the boys for their work during a short week, to grit it out and get that win,” Manns said.

The Panthers next play Friday at John F. Kennedy. “Another short week,” Manns said.
