CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea – Trajon and Onzei Weaver provided their biggest PCS Plane dividend yet for Kubasaki on Friday.
The junior brothers, who transferred from Twentynine Palms, Calif., over the summer, accounted for three touchdowns and A.J. Sablan ran for two more as the Dragons outlasted Humphreys 40-20 at Blackhawks Field.
With the win, the Dragons (4-2) ended their regular season by clinching the visitors’ berth in the Oct. 28 Far East Division I title game at Kadena. The Blackhawks fell to 1-4 with one game left.
“We’re loving our Dragons,” Kubasaki coach Tony Alvarado said upon learning his team is going to the championship game. They haven’t won the D-I title since 2013.
But the victory wasn’t easy. Though Kubasaki led 24-6 at halftime, the Blackhawks brought some strong running to the field in the second half and cut the lead to 24-20 before the Dragons put the game away.
“Our offense came through really strong in the first half,” Alvarado said, “but Humphreys came out strong and ran some power football (in the second half). They were steamrolling us, but our defense held up at the end.”
It was a 35-yard pass from Trajon Weaver to Onzei Weaver that boosted the lead to 32-20. “That was the turning point,” Alvarado said.
The Weavers earlier connected on a 40-yard TD pass. Trajon Weaver added a 35-yard scoring run. Sablan’s touchdown runs were for 15 and 4 yards, and Haustyn Lundsford added a 6-yard scoring run.
Joshua Canion put the Blackhawks on the board with a 7-yard run in the first half. Humphreys cut the lead to four points on Luke Robinson’s 10-yard scoring run and Bradley Miller’s 40-yard TD pass to Christian Orlanda.
“We got close. We were getting there,” Blackhawks coach Reggie Meno said. “But we got some penalties that hurt us. They (Dragons) played a great game.”
The Blackhawks finish the season at Kadena next Friday at 6 p.m.
