CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea – It took four tries, but better line play and taking better care of the football gave Humphreys the win Friday it had sought all season.
Joshua Canion and Luke Robinson each ran for touchdowns and Bradley Miller passes to Andrew Thompson for another as the Blackhawks rallied from a 6-0 halftime deficit to beat Nile C. Kinnick 20-9, improving to 1-3 on the season. The Red Devils fell to 2-3.
“The monkey finally jumped off our backs,” Humphreys coach Reggie Meno said. “The boys got everything clicking, they worked together and they won it.”
Kinnick went in front 6-0 on a 2-yard touchdown run by Tre Bennett in the second quarter.
At halftime, Meno said he discussed what needed to be done with his offensive line.
“I said if we’re going to win the game, it will be because of you,” Meno said. “This game is going to be won in the trenches. We have to do what we’ve been coaching them to do the entire season.”
Canion got the Blackhawks on the board with a 6-yard run to open the second half. A two-point conversion put Humphreys ahead to stay 8-6.
“They came out in the second half and rammed it down our throats,” Red Devils coach Dan Joley said. “Humphreys was just more physical than us. They came out inn the second half ready to play.”
Robinson added a 4-yard run to make it 14-6. Kinnick responded with Koboyo Awesso’s first field goal of 21 yards to cut it to 14-9. Humphreys then iced it with Miller’s 45-yard TD pass to Thompson.
“And we had no turnovers,” Meno said. “That was a big key. All three teams that beat us capitalized on our mistakes.”
Both the Red Devils and the Blackhawks are still alive for a shot at the No. 2 seed in the DODEA-Pacific Division I final scheduled for Oct. 28.
But they each need to win out and get help trying to knock off either Kadena or Kubasaki in the coming weeks. The Panthers beat the Dragons 32-7 Friday at Kubasaki.
Humphreys hosts Kubasaki while Kinnick travels to Kadena next Friday; both kickoffs are at 6 p.m.
