OSAN AIR BASE, South Korea – Joshua Low and a solid ground game helped Osan right the ship and get back into the race for a berth in the Far East Division II title game.
Low, a junior quarterback, scored three times and Eddie Kim also ran for a touchdown as the Cougars downed Robert D. Edgren 30-15 Saturday. Osan leveled its record at 1-1, while the Eagles fell to 0-3.
“We tackled, we put helmets on the ball and we blocked pretty well,” coach Tyler Greve said of a Cougars team that bounced back from its season-opening 45-6 loss at American School In Japan.
Osan stayed on the ground almost exclusively, going with rushing plays on every down but one.
“What we want to be is a grind-it-out power team,” Greve said. “On defense, we want to swarm to the ball and make the tackle. And we did that today.”
Low’s three touchdowns came on short goal-line bursts. Senior back Eddie Kim also scored, on an 18-yard run; Kim finished with 180 yards on 39 attempts. Martin Heffele led the Cougar defense with 10 tackles, while Sam Myrup had a fumble recovery.
The lone Cougars’ pass play turned into Edgren’s first touchdown, a 62-yard fumble return by Hajime Reed. P.J. Lorenzo ran 24 yards for a TD in the closing minutes for the Eagles, a play set up by an Edgren fumble recovery at Osan’s 19-yard line.
“We keep showing flashes of doing well, but we just can’t finish,” Eagles coach Aaron Wells said. “It’s just going to take our guys learning how to win.”
The Cougars travel to Matthew C. Perry and the Eagles host Daegu next Saturday. Osan-Perry kicks off at 1:30 p.m. and Daegu-Edgren at noon or 1 p.m.
