AGANA HEIGHTS, Guam – Aaron Johnson suffered a slight hamstring injury late in Guam’s track and field season. One might not have guessed it Saturday.
Johnson recovered a bad snap and took it 60 yards for a touchdown, one of four scores he accounted for in leading Guam High to its third straight victory and its first shutout of the season, 63-0 over Tiyan.
“It’s good to be young,” Panthers coach Jacob Dowdell said of Johnson, who also rushed 2 yards for a touchdown and went 7-for-8 passing for 200 yards and two TDs for Guam High, which has outscored three opponents 156-15.
It’s not something Dowdell says he was expecting when the season began with the Panthers having to replace four graduated linemen.
“Hats off to my coaching staff for keeping everybody together, and the players for responding to the coaching,” Dowdell said. “Flexibility is the key. It’s made all the difference.”
Johnson threw touchdown passes of 65 and 35 yards to Ben Harris. Cameron Brantley ran 20 yards for a score and Noah Harris 25 for another. DeShawn Baird ran just four times, but for 104 yards and two TDs and also intercepted a pass.
Leading the way defensively was Terrell Rasario, with 10 tackles and two forced fumbles, one of which he returned 30 yards for a touchdown.
Prior to the game, the team held a ceremony in honor of former Panther Dante Baines, who played for Guam High from 2013-15 and was an Air Force staff sergeant who died in a recent accident in Korea. Dowdell said the Panthers are dedicating this season to Baines’ memory.
The Panthers next face their biggest rival, Father Duenas Memorial, at 7 p.m. Friday at Panthers Field.
