Division I
NILE C. KINNICK RED DEVILS
2021-22 season record — 4-9 overall, 2-5 DODEA-Japan.
Head coach — Robert Stovall, 11th season.
Key performers — Luke Oriem, Sr., G; Austin Davenport, Jr., F; Nick Whyte, So., F; Xavier Wright, Jr., G; Tyrrell Turner, So.; Samuel Montgomery, So. (transferred from E.J. King); Branden Doctor, Jr.
Outlook — Rebuilding-reloading. Talent is there, but like most DODEA-Pacific teams, hasn’t had a full season in three years, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic.
Division II
E.J. KING COBRAS
2021-22 season record — 9-7 overall, 3-5 DODEA-Japan.
Head coach — Travis Elliott, fourth season.
Key performers — Cameron Reinhart, Sr., F-G; Nolan FitzGerald, Jr., F; Jeremy Phillips, So., G.
Outlook — Reloading. A first for the Cobras under Elliott: No help from the PCS Plane. But the starting lineup returns, including Reinhart, one of few big men in the entire league.
ROBERT D. EDGREN EAGLES
2021-22 season record — 1-9 overall, 0-6 DODEA-Japan.
Head coach — David Carrano, first season, and Andre Thibert, 12th season.
Key performers — Micah Magat, So., G; O’moj Reeves, Sr., C; Caleb Kennedy, So., G; Gabe Simmons, Sr., F-G; Paul Perez, Sr., G.
Outlook — Rebuilding-reloading. Hoping a mix of youth and experience can set the Eagles in a good direction. Carrano was an Eagles assistant in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Reeves, at 6-foot-6, is a rare big body in a league filled with guards and precious little height.
MATTHEW C. PERRY SAMURAI
2021-22 season record — 5-7 overall, 5-3 DODEA-Japan.
Head coach — Daniel Burns, second season.
Key performers — Ronald Reyes, Sr., G; Joben Silang, Sr., G (transferred from Zama); Billy Hill, Jr., F-G; Tyler Gaines, Jr., SG; Jahiion Francois, Fr., G; Eddie Pacleb, Sr., G.
Outlook — Rebuilding. Samurai lost two key seniors, Shion Fleming and Roy Clayton, but Burns feels the guard play is better than last season’s. The versatile Hill is what Burns calls his “Shion-in-training.”
YOKOTA PANTHERS
2021-22 season record — 11-3 overall, 6-0 DODEA-Japan.
Head coach — Dan Galvin, sixth season.
Key performers — Dylan Tomas, Sr., G; Marcus Woods, Sr., F; DeShawn Bryant, Sr., F; Zemon Davis, Sr., F; Damian Abrams, Sr., F-G; Paul Franks, Sr.; Matthew Hullman, Sr.; Earl Maverick Larino, Sr.; Senna Solberg, Sr.; Royce Canta, Jr., G; Jai Bailey, So., F.
Outlook — Contending. The Panthers are loaded with senior leadership. Not much size, but great speed. If they stay healthy and execute, their first Far East title since 2016 is not out of the question.
ZAMA TROJANS
2021-22 season record — 11-3 overall, .786; 7-2 DODEA-Japan, .778; 3-3 Kanto Plain Association of Secondary Schools, .500; defending DODEA-Japan tournament champion.
Head coach — Shawen Smith, first season.
Key performers — Jarius Brown, So., G-F; Ryan Pena, Sr., G; Simon Escalante, Sr., G; Kosey Hameen, So; Dylan Helton, Fr., G; Tim Armstrong, Jr., F; Amari King, So.; Kekua “Rhino” Aumua, Fr., F; Casey Stewart, Fr.; Chris Jones, So.
Outlook — Rebuilding-reloading. A youngish squad with just two seniors and 18 underclassmen. A matter of molding the younger players into a cohesive unit and fill the shoes of the experienced graduates.
