KADENA AIR BASE, Okinawa – Compared to last year’s island golf championships that featured playoffs in both the boys and girls competitions, Danny Contreras of Kubasaki and Kadena’s Emma Conroy left little to chance on Thursday.
Contreras carded an 88 on the 6,714-yard, par-72 Banyan Tree Golf Course to outplay three others, including last year’s island champion Carter Johnson of Kadena, by three strokes.
“My drivers were working really well as well as my putting,” Contreras said of his round, played in fair but windy conditions. “That made it really difficult.”
Meanwhile, Conroy, a freshman, outshot teammate Teiya Shepard-Savage 112-119 to capture the girls title. She credited her mid-iron shots for helping her overcome driving problems during the round.
“Practicing made it a little better and Teiya was a great playing partner and a tough competitor,” Conroy said. “Positive, even though we’re playing against each other. It’s a great feeling to be island champion, but I hope I play better next time.”
Conroy and Shepard-Savage were the only two out of 15 girls who made the nine-hole cut of 60. The boys cut was 55; 11 of 15 boys players made the cut.
