The AFNORTH Lions completed an unbeaten regular season Saturday and claimed the Division III conference football title with a 48-12 victory over visiting Baumholder.

E.J. Ruiz threw three touchdown passes — a 35-yarder to Kevin Kropp, a 30-yarder to James Perea and a 25-yarder to Josh Ruiz — and All-Europe running back Brock Blankenship ran for two touchdowns as the Lions (6-0 overall, 4-0 in D-III) advanced to a home semifinal game Saturday against the No. 4 D-III team, Sigonella.

"With Brock running over them and E.J. going over and around them, we pretty well controlled the clock," AFNORTH coach Greg Blankenship said by phone.

Brock Blankenship had 11 tackles and two sacks, Aaron Black had five tackles and a sack, and Kyle Higgins picked off a Baumholder pass and shut down All-Europe receiver Fred Styles, according to coach Blankenship. That helped solve the offense run by Baumholder (4-2, 4-1). "We did a good job of staying home and executing our assignments," he said.

In other D-III and D-IV games this weekend:

Alconbury 22, Menwith Hill 20: At Alconbury, England, the unexpected happened. Ahead 20-19 with just nine seconds to play, Menwith Hill shanked a punt for negative yardage and had the ball go out of bounds on its own 5-yard line, according to Alconbury coach Duke Eidt.

Alconbury’s Greg Pettiway then made a 22-yard field goal to advance the Dragons (4-2) to the D-IV championship game against conference champ Rota.

Menwith Hill (2-4) had blocked Alconbury’s attempt for a go-ahead field goal moments earlier. The Mustangs took possession inside their own 20, only to see the poor punt give Alconbury a second chance.

Rota 52, Brussels 8: At Rota, Spain, the Admirals celebrated Senior Day by giving All-European R.J. Curley the second half off. Curley scored three times in the first quarter of his final home game as the Admirals (5-1) took a 28-0 lead against the Brigands (0-6) in a game that wrapped up the D-IV conference title.

Curley’s fellow seniors, quarterback Scott Curtain and receiver Brandon Stover, connected on a 62-yard TD pass for Rota, which also got two touchdowns each from senior Leland Zuniga and junior Caleb Arnold. Sophomore Marcos Wolfe ran in the other TD for Rota, which also bid farewell to senior Luke Morgane.

Vicenza 40, Sigonella 10: At Vicenza, Italy, Micky Stoner ran for one TD and passed for two as the Cougars (4-2) gained a D-III semifinal Saturday at Baumholder.

The Williams brothers, Nick X. and Nick S., accounted for more than 200 all-purpose yards for Vicenza. Nick X. ran for 42 yards and a TD and amassed 115 yards on kickoff returns. Nick S. caught three passes for 57 yards and a TD, according to Vicenza coach Adam Ridgley.

Ridgley said James Erickson led his defense with 16 tackles, four for sacks, and a fumble recovery. Daviano Dean also had four sacks, and Zack Bishop was in on 10 stops, one a sack. Kola Awe added a TD when he returned an interception 45 yards for the score. Junior Vimoto and Shakael Skeete also picked off Sigonella passes.

Sig’s Ricky Schroff was 10 of 15 for 130 yards, 65 of them to Marco Summerfield for a touchdown.

Hohenfels 14, Munich Rangers 14: At Hohenfels, Tim Salerno threw two touchdown passes, and James Robinson ran in a 2-point conversion with three minutes to play to salvage the tie for the Tigers (0-5-1).

Salerno’s scoring passes, an 18-yarder to Miguel Chestnut in the opening quarter and a 28-yarder to Ryan Gardner in the final quarter, came after the Rangers of the German League had taken a 14-6 halftime lead.
