YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan — After not being on the shot-put radar all season on Okinawa, Pinkey McBride picked the last meet of the regular season, 1,000 miles to the north, to earn her biggest victory.
On her very first try of the day, McBride tossed the shot 10.58 meters, shattering the Kanto Plain Association of Secondary Schools championship meet record of 10.19 meters (See results below).
“I usually don’t think about anything when I throw,” McBride said. “But before I threw it, I felt an adrenaline rush. I said to myself, ‘This is it, this is what I came here for,’ and I got my best throw.”
That effort came in the preliminary round, qualifying her for the final, which she won with a put of 10.17, well further than the 8.37 of Tegra Bowie, a military dependent at Zion Christian Academy, who won the Okinawa island championship last month.
“Awesome,” said McBride’s coach, Charles Burns. “She did a great job.”
Kubasaki took eight total gold medals in an event that crowns Kanto Plain champions, but also welcomed Kubasaki, Zion and the new track club attached to Robert D. Edgren High School, the Misawa Flyers of northern Japan, as non-scoring guests.
St. Mary’s International repeated its boys team title, as did the American School In Japan in the girls standings.
Host Yokota placed second in the boys standings and third in the girls.
The Panthers’ girls won both relays, breaking their meet and league record of 50.6 seconds in the 400 relay, clocking a 49.8 — the first time any girls team had ever run a sub-50 time in the event. They also recorded 1-2-3 sweeps of the 100 and 200.
“We’re going to keep breaking them, too,” said Lindaya Brown, who ran the anchor leg. “We work hard, we’re dedicated, we have good teamwork, we know our strengths and weaknesses, we just work together.”
Kinnick senior Joel Pettigrew “made it worth the trip,” according to Devils coach Matt Martinez, as he swept the golds in the shot put (13.14 meters) and discus (34.98).
“I’m very impressed with Joel,” Martinez said of Pettigrew, who qualified for the finals in each event last year but didn’t place. “He kept at it and it paid off. He wanted to come out and perform, and he did.”
Fellow Kinnick senior Leonard Lynce, who had been hampered all season by a groin pull and a strained hip flexor, capped his career by tying for the 200 gold.
“It’s a good way to go out,” he said.
But it was the Dragons who enjoyed a field day, with two of their premier athletes enjoying huge comebacks after being saddled by injuries all season.
Tony Price, a sophomore sprinter who recorded the region’s best 100-meter time of 11.06 seconds in the Petty Memorial Meet, claimed four golds, capturing the 400, tying for first in the 100 and running legs in both the 400 and 1,600 relays.
“It feels great,” said Price, who pulled a hamstring in the Petty meet at Kubasaki last month and later suffered from Achilles’ tendinitis. “I finally feel like I’m back on the team now, doing what we do.”
Serafina Smith, a senior who went undefeated last year, had seen limited action since returning last month from a stress fracture in her left ankle and was nagged by a pulled quadricep muscle heading into the Kanto meet.
But she looked like her old self as she captured the 100 hurdles, clocking a 15.66, two-tenths of a second better than Catherine Thornton of ASIJ.
Other Kubasaki gold medalists included Brian Davis, who won the boys 110 hurdles. Stephen Thompson won the high jump at 1.85 meters and helped the Dragons win the 400 and 1,600 relays.
“The kids enjoy being here and it’s fun,” Burns said. “We proved the folks down south can do this. The weather is nice and they can run.”
