Kyle Ulses ran for 228 yards and four touchdowns Saturday as Heidelberg clinched the Division I-South championship and home-field advantage for the European Division I semifinals Oct. 25 with a 27-7 victory over Vilseck.

Ulses scored on runs of 17 and 30 yards as the Lions (4-1 overall, 2-0 I-South) took a 13-0 halftime lead. Then, after Vilseck’s Jamal Grant returned the second-half kickoff 80 yards, Ulses added a 1-yard TD plunge in the third quarter and a 3-yard scoring run in the final quarter.

Heidelberg’s defense made sure Grant’s big play would be Vilseck’s only score, holding Vilseck (3-1, 0-1) twice on downs in the red zone and getting an interception from Chris Cuthbert.

Alex Savusa led Heidelberg’s defense with eight solo tackles and five assists, Cuthbert was in on seven tackles and Chris Frazier knocked down a fourth-and-goal pass attempt to help keep Vilseck scoreless from scrimmage.

Frazier’s knockdown completed Heidelberg’s escape from a first-and-goal hole dug for the Lions when Angelo Hall blocked a Heidelberg punt. Hall, a defensive tackle, was in on 10 tackles, second to teammate T.J. Blunt, who was in on 11 stops.

Nieko Carr ran the ball 19 times for 79 yards, and teammate Angelo Anderson amassed 77 yards on seven rushes for Vilseck, which hosts winless Patch Saturday. A Vilseck victory would put the Falcons ino a semifinal game Oct. 25 at the home of the I-North champion, either Ramstein or Kaiserslautern.
