Sigonella won its first European championship since 2010 with a 56-6 victory over Alconbury at Sigonella High School on Saturday afternoon.
The victory was the Jaguars’ sixth mercy-rule win of the season, with the hosts finishing with a perfect 6-0 record.
Special teams were a factor from the get-go. The Dragons (3-3) succeeded with an onside kick on the opening kickoff, only to go three and out. Sigonella’s Isiah Wilson blocked the punt and recovered it for a touchdown.
That started a stretch of 26 points for the Jaguars. Quarterback Ryan Miniard threw a 21-yard score to Wilson, and two plays later, junior defensive end Aiden Shaposka recovered a fumble at the Alconbury 5-yard line. Sigonella freshman Makari Spencer scored on a five-yard sweep to make it 20-0.
Miniard and Spencer connected on a 3-yard pitch-and-catch to increase the lead to 26-0.
The lone bright for the Dragons came on a 60-yard scamper for a touchdown, but it turned out to be just a small blip for the Jaguars.
After a failed Alconbury onside kick, Miniard hit sophomore Henri Hurst for a 30-yard touchdown. On the next possession, Spencer scored on a 13-yard run, and Miniard tossed a 13-yard touchdown to center Mandy Gonzalez right before the break.
Junior signal caller Miniard had 147 passing yards and four scores, while Spencer totaled 46 yards rushing to go with the two touchdowns.
