RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany — The American Overseas School of Rome won its third consecutive Division III soccer championship Saturday by defeating Rota 3-0.

Despite being double- and triple-teamed, All-Europe striker and tournament MVP Davide Lelli scored three goals.

In the game’s fourth minute, Lelli scored on a header off Edoardo Linari’s deft cross from just outside the box.

Four minutes into the second half, Lelli doubled the Falcons’ lead with a fine individual effort. He made a long run to take the ball from a Rota player and scored on a breakaway.

Lelli’s final goal was set up by Eros Shenediela’s free kick about 15 minutes after halftime. Wiuff blocked Shenediela’s well-placed shot but the rebound went to Lelli, who shot into an open net.

Rota goalkeeper Ryan Wiuff — pronounced “view” — got his hands on Lelli’s first shot but had no chance on the others as Lelli eluded a defense geared specifically to stop him.

“They made a lot of tough shots,” said Wiuff, who made only five saves but was active throughout the match. “They put a lot of pressure on us.”

But Wiuff appreciated the efforts of his teammates.

“I want to thank my defense,” Wiuff said. “They did a great job.”

The title was the sixth in seven seasons for AOSR, which last dropped a title game in 2002. The Falcons now have Europe’s longest streak of titles.

“They have a great team,” Rota’s Jason Allard said of an opponent that placed three players — Lelli, tireless Giulio Caperchi and Almir Kasumovic — on the all-tournament team.

From the way the Falcons celebrated, dousing one another with water and hugging everyone in sight, an observer might think the Falcons are unfamiliar with winning. But they were simply joyful.

“Of course,” Lelli said with a smile when asked if it was still fun to win this tournament. “That’s why we play.”
