Group of runners take off running from the start line

ARLINGTON, Va. — Sam Chelanga, who ran at Liberty University and is now a U.S. Army officer wearing the colors of Fort Liberty, won the 40th Army Ten Miler Sunday on the streets of Arlington, Va., and Washington.

The two-time NCAA champion at 10,000 meters toured the course in a time of 48:39.24, a 4:52 mile pace.

He finished 15 seconds ahead of runner-up Elkanah Kibet, also an Army officer and a sub-2:10 marathoner.

In the women’s race, former U.S. Naval Academy cross country and track standout Elizabeth Sullivan was the winner in a time of 56:57.96, 

A 5:42 mile pace that put her 1:21 ahead of runner-up Laura Hanson at the finish line.

About 28,000 runners took part in the race.
