Daily throws for surprise TD, Army’s ground game and trick play stymie FAU 24-7

Bryson Daily threw for a surprise touchdown as Army’s running game dominated and the Black Knights iced the game with another trick play to debut in the American Athletic Conference with a 24-7 win over Florida Atlantic on Saturday in Boca Raton, Fla.

A play after what would have been Daily’s second touchdown pass was dropped in the end zone on a third-and-12 play, holder Matthew Rhodes scored on a 23-yard run around the left end on a fake field goal with 13:57 left in the fourth.

If that 15-play, 96-yard, 10 1/2-minute drive following an interception by Max DiDomenico didn’t salt the game away, DiDomenico’s stop of FAU quarterback Cam Fancher on 4th-and-goal from the 1 with 8:44 to go on the ensuing possession sure did.

Army (2-0, 1-0) used 14 plays to run out the clock and finished with 38-minutes, 39-seconds time of possession.

The Black Knights, who began playing football in 1890, are in a conference for just the second time. They played in Conference USA from 1998-2004. They joined the AAC as a football only member, joining rival Navy, which joined in 2015.

Kanye Udoh capped an 82-yard drive on Army’s first possession with an 8-yard run. The next possession Daily found Casey Reynolds wide open behind the defense for a 44-yard score.

The Owls (0-2, 0-1) capitalized on a fumble with Fancher hitting Omari Hayes just before halftime.

Army opened the second half with a field goal before DiDomenico’s pick set up the key drive.

Noah Short, who came in with less than 100 career yards, beat that by halftime before finishing with 160 for the Black Knights. Army finished with 405 on the ground, 117 by Daily on 18 keepers.

Fancher threw for 193 yards for FAU. The Owls rushed for just 42.

Navy controls Temple from the outset for a 38-11 win

Quarterback Blake Horvath tallied 234 total yards and four touchdowns and Navy beat Temple 38-11 as the two teams commenced American Athletic Conference play on Saturday in Annapolis, Md.

Horvath ran for 122 yards on 15 carries and three touchdowns and threw for 112 yards and a touchdown. Navy (2-0, 1-0) outgained Temple (0-2, 0-1) by a margin of 409-312 and committed just four penalties.

The Midshipmen’s defense recorded the game’s first points on a safety when Temple quarterback Forest Brock was tackled in the end zone following a 7-yard loss.

Navy made it 9-0 when Horvath ran it in from the 2 to end an 11-play, 58-yard drive to close the first quarter. On Temple’s following drive, Jaxson Campbell intercepted Brock. Then, on the ensuing play, Horvath ran for a 62-yard score to make it 16-0.

Temple proceeded to run eight plays before being forced to punt. And, again, on Navy’s first play from scrimmage, running back Alex Tecza ran 65 yards for a score to make it 23-0 with 8:04 before halftime.

Following a 51-3 loss at Oklahoma last week to start its season, Temple recorded its first touchdown of the year when Brock threw a 23-yard touchdown to Dante Wright to reduce the Owls’ deficit to 38-11 with 10 minutes left.

Brock threw for 277 yards and two interceptions.

Brown throws 2 TD passes as San Jose State beats Air Force 17-7

Emmett Brown completed 17 of 32 passes for 262 yards and two touchdowns, including a 58-yard TD connection with Jackson Canaan that gave San Jose State the lead for good in the first quarter and the Spartans beat Air Force 17-7 Saturday night at Falcon Stadium in Colorado.

Brown hit Nick Nash for an 18-yard touchdown to cap an eight-play, 75-yard opening drive. Air Force (1-1, 0-1 Mountain West) tied the score when Cade Davis scored on a 6-yard run with 5:29 to go in the first quarter, set up by Jerome Gaillard Jr.’s interception and 41 yard return to the 28.

A pass interference penalty against the Air Force defense on third-and-9 kept SJSU’s ensuing drive alive and two plays later Brown, as he was being hit by the free-running blitzing middle linebacker, hit Canaan in stride down the left side on the numbers for a TD that made it 14-7 less than 2 minutes later.

Kyler Halvorson kicked a 34-yard field goal to cap the scoring with 8:25 left.

John Busha was 7-of-20 passing for 54 yards with two interceptions for Air Force. Harris finished with 50 yards rushing on eight carries.

Nash had seven receptions for 90 yards and Canaan added 88 yards receiving for San Jose State (2-0, 1-0).
