Suit up, football fans: Army and Navy have revealed their uniforms for the 124th annual Army-Navy game, with each paying tribute to an aspect of the respective services’ rich histories.
The Midshipmen will don uniforms that honor the U.S. Submarine Force, supporting personnel and their families — the “Silent Service.” Designed in cooperation with Under Armour, the Eclipse Navy-colored uniforms are meant to mimic “the covert design of a submarine hull,” according to a Navy Athletics news release.
The white lettering mimics the classification numbers on a submarine, and the helmets feature a Virginia-class submarine underwater.
The Black Knights’ uniforms are inspired by the 20th anniversary of the 3rd Infantry Division’s participation in the opening phase of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The uniform pays tribute to the division’s “Dogface Soldiers,” with the division’s nickname “Rock of the Marne” on the helmets.
The tan coloring is meant to evoke the deserts of Iraq. A 3rd Infantry Division patch, streamer and unit insignia add to the tribute.
Last year, Army beat Navy, 20-17, in double overtime at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field stadium.
The 2023 Army-Navy game will be played Dec. 9 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. Navy leads the series at 64-62-7.
Army, which defeated Air Force 23-3 on Nov. 4, can claim the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy for the 10th time with a win.
