The director of choral music and theory at Kadena High School has been selected as the 2006 Department of Defense Dependents Schools Okinawa Teacher of the Year.

Tim Black, who leads the school’s chorus and teaches a number of music-related classes, was nominated by several parents, according to Henry Meyer, DODDS-Okinawa school district spokesman.

Black, who has been at the school for four years and a teacher for 14, was chosen by Superintendent Gayle Vaughn-Wiles out of a dozen teachers who were nominated.

As teacher of the year he will represent the Okinawa school district in many activities and events, such as working with local Okinawan teachers who are training to teach English, Meyer said.

Black also will compete for the overall Department of Defense Education Activity’s Teacher of the Year award.
