FUSSA TANABATA FESTIVAL 2016 (Tokyo): Aug. 4-7; streets from Fussa Station to Fussa city office are decorated with bamboo leaves and colorful streamers to celebrate this annual festival whcih features a dance parade with more than 2,000 local residents 5:35-8:50 p.m. from Ginza-dori, Ekimae-dori to Sakae-dori on Aug. 5, Miss Vega beauty contest and more; JR Fussa Station, a 15-minute walk from Yokota Air Base; 042-551-1699.

ASAGAYA TANABATA FESTIVAL (Tokyo): Aug. 5-9, 10 a.m.-9 p.m.; Asagaya Pearl Center, a shopping mall from JR Asagaya Station South Exit to Ome Route, is decorated with bamboo leaves, huge Harry Potter dolls, animated characters and more; JR Asagaya Station on Chuo or Sobu Lines; 03-3312-6181.

SENDAI TANABATA FESTIVAL (Miyagi prefecture): Aug. 6-8; the most famous of the star or weaver festivals, Sendai’s Tanabata is counted among the big three Tohoku summer festivals and features huge decorations about the shopping arcades and main streets; 022-265-8185.
