A small diner not far from the airfield at Osan Air Base combines U.S. military heritage with American and South Korean fare.
The BlackCat Lounge might escape your attention until you’re close enough to catch sight of its blinking, red-and-blue “open” sign.
From the outside, it blends in with the nearby office buildings, but there’s a lot of history and personality inside. Its deceivingly small exterior opens into a spacious, two-room venue.
The front room dining area is dedicated to former Air Force Col. Charles Wilson, commander from 1995 to 1996 of the Black Cats of the 5th Reconnaissance Squadron. The second room, which is large enough for celebrations and parties, can be reserved from private functions.
BlackCat is open from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. with an extensive menu.
For breakfast, you can order a variety of omelets, pancakes, French toast and pastries with juice, tea, coffee and soda. Breakfast ends around 10:30 a.m.
The more-substantial lunch menu features American staples like sandwiches, burgers and fries. You can also order bulgogi, bibimbap and other traditional Korean meals.
My cheeseburger, fries and cola was very enjoyable and cost about $10 total.
BlackCat closes around 2 p.m., so expect a lunch rush. It’s still a great place for a midday repast.
