The Edeka grocery store in the Pfalz Center in Kaiserslautern is slated to close Saturday, several local German news organizations reported this week.
The closure was announced suddenly, SWR reported, noting that some employees found out Monday evening after coming across an online clearance advertisement.
The store’s 70 employees were officially told Tuesday, according to SWR, attributing the closure to failed negotiations with the building’s owner on desired renovations.
Though there’s no official closure announcement on the store’s website, a flier declaring “everything must go” announced discounts ranging from 20% to 40% storewide through Saturday.
On Thursday, the Pfalz Center parking lot was nearly full around noon, and Edeka was teeming with customers filling up multiple grocery carts.
Repeated calls to the store Friday evening went unanswered.
