With four games left in the season, 1. FC Kaiserslautern dismissed coach Markus Anfang on Tuesday and hired former Red Devil player Torsten Lieberkecht to take over.
FCK officials said the reason for the change was that they felt the team had not been playing up to its potential in the past weeks.
The Red Devils have lost their last three games and scored only one goal, a penalty, in the stretch. They are in seventh place in the second division, three points out of third and a chance to play a relegation series for a Bundesliga promotion.
Anfang took over the team at the beginning of the season and had a contract that ran through the next season.
Lieberknecht, who played 15 games for the Red Devils between 1992 and 1994, coached Eintracht Braunschweig and SV Darmstadt 98 into the Bundesliga.
He has replaced Anfang once before. He took over the helm in Darmstadt in 2021, when Anfang left Darmstadt shortly before the season began to coach Werder Bremen.
He will have his first practice with the team this afternoon and will have his first game as coach of the Red Devils when they face Schalke 04 at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at Fritz Walter Stadium.
