Kaiserslautern is asking residents and business owners to weigh in on a potential tax targeting single-use food packaging, containers and utensils.

The aim is to cut down on waste and encourage more eco-friendly alternatives, city officials said in a statement Thursday. An anonymous public survey is now live on the city’s official online platform for public participation.

The proposed tax would apply to items like takeaway coffee cups and burger wrappers, the statement said. Businesses would be responsible for the cost, which could lead to higher prices for customers.

No specific rates have been proposed yet. The Baden-Württemberg city of Tübingen, which pioneered the approach, charges 50 euro cents for disposable cups, tableware and food containers, and 20 euro cents for cutlery and straws.
