1.FC Kaiserslautern missed the chance to defend third place and move within a point of a direct promotion place Sunday, losing in Magdeburg 2-0.
With the win, Magdeburg took over third place in the second division from the Red Devils, leaving both teams with 46 points. FCM has the advantage over Kaiserslautern on goal differential.
The result also left both teams four points behind Cologne and a direct promotion spot.
Magdeburg scored both goals in the first half. Baris Atik, a former Red Devil scored the 1-0 in the 29th minute.
In the 43 minute, Atik, who played 12 games for FCK during the 2017/18 season, scored his second goal of the game when his cross went awry, hit the post and the ball landed in the net.
The Red Devils couldn’t put much together offensively in either half, and deservedly left the three points in Magdeburg.
It remains a tight race in Bundesliga 2, with six games to go, especially for third place which qualifies for a playoff against the 16th-place Bundesliga team.
Besides FCK and Magdeburg, Paderborn, Elversberg and Düsseldorf are still contending.
The Red Devils are back at Fritz Walter Stadium on April 12 for an 8:30 p.m. match against Nuremberg, then head to Braunschweig on April 19.
