German police will launch their next nationwide “speed camera marathon” from April 7 to 13, with the bulk of the enforcement expected on April 9, authorities said.

The campaign is held twice per year and involves a surge in radar speed checks, especially on accident-prone roads and in areas considered high risk, such as school zones and construction sites. The goal is to improve road safety.

Unless otherwise indicated, the speed limit in Germany is 50 kph (about 31 mph) in urban areas and 100 kph (about 62 mph) outside city limits. On the autobahn, the recommended speed limit is 130 kph (about 80 mph), unless otherwise posted.

Police in Rheinland-Pfalz are expected to publish a list of planned speed camera locations about a week in advance.
