Ramstein High School robotics whizzes earned their second consecutive invitation to compete on the world stage after topping more than two dozen teams over the weekend.

Ramstein Royal Robotics’ veteran team — one of two Ramstein teams competing — won the regional First Tech Challenge at Kaiserslautern High School on Saturday, according to team coach Alfredo Rios.

For the Royals, senior Gwyn Cedarholm; juniors Deylan Acasio, Erik Ojala and Xander Sanchez; and sophomores Brody Smalley and Douglas Morris are headed to the FTC World Championships in Houston on April 16 to 19.

The team earned “alliance team captain” and the “inspire award,” based on its performance, robot design, outreach programs, engineering portfolio and collaboration, among other categories, Rios said. Ramstein earned both team invitations to the world competition, Rios said, but a Kaiserslautern High School team was given the second one since it partnered with Ramstein in the final rounds.
