A 22-year-old American man is facing a 2,000 euro fine and a one month license suspension after a joyride that culminated in him driving a Ford Mustang 100 kph through the town of Katzweiler early this morning, according to Kaiserslautern police.
Police were unable to confirm whether the driver was a U.S. service member, but Autobahn authorities said he had a USAREUR license plate and an APO mailing address.
The speedster’s journey started shortly after midnight on the A6 between Kaiserslautern-East and Kaiserslautern-West, where he was recorded driving 172 kph in a 130 kph zone, police said. Soon after, he was spotted traveling 160 kph in a 100 kph zone on the B270 near Siegelbach.
The driver was stopped in Katzweiler after authorities clocked him driving at 100 kph within town limits. During a subsequent inspection, police discovered the tread depth on one of the Mustang’s rear tires was 1 mm, well below the minimum allowable depth of 1.6 mm and the recommended depth of 4 mm.
No injuries or property damage have been reported in connection with the traffic violations.
