Red Devils beat Münster to stay near top of second division table

A late goal gave 1. FC Kaiserslautern a 2-1 victory over Preussen Münster on Sunday, keeping the team in contention for a Bundesliga promotion.

After a scoreless first half in front of more than 42,000 spectators at Fritz Walter Stadium, the Red Devils finally got on the board in the 51st minute. Marlon Ritter took a pass from Erik Wekesser and drilled a right-footer into the lower right corner of the goal, past Preussen keeper Morten Behrens.

The Red Devils kept the pressure on, with scoring chances in the 71st and 78th minutes, but Münster evened the score in the 79th minute on a goal by David Kinsembe.

It looked like the match would end in a tie until Luca Sirch scored the winning goal in the second minute of stoppage time. The defender took a pass from FCK newcomer Faride Alidou in the box and converted s right-footed shot to give the Red Devils the victory.

The aftermath of the game saw Kaiserslautern coach Markus Anfang red-carded after a vehement discussion with officials.

The third win in a row put the Red Devils in fourth place with 35 points, two points behind league leader Cologne but tied with Hamburg and Magdeburg on points.

Next up for Kaiserslautern is a Saturday night game in Berlin, before the Red Devils host Hannover 96 at 1 p.m. on Feb. 15 at Fritz Walter Stadium.
